spirit in the water
Singer/guitarist Leni Stern wraps her arms around a global sound on her striking new EP, ‘Sprit In the Water’. Fueled by recent journeys to India, Mali, Madagascar and elsewhere, Stern has delivered an intense collection of songs that combine South Indian Ragas (sung in the local dialect of Tamil) with haunting tales of African sorcerers, sung in Wollof, the language of Senegal, and more. Recording on analog tape, Stern creates a warm, soulful sound for the EP, recalling jazz and rock albums of the 1960’s.

africa
Leni Stern's 'AFRICA,' two years in the making, integrates African and Western music forms with such authenticity that it may come to be regarded as an 'Audio Documentary' of African musical life. Recorded in Africa, playing with local musicians at the pace of life in Africa, Stern invites listeners to immerse themselves in African culture as she experienced it, first-hand.

alu maye (have you heard)
This 5 song EP juxtaposes Stern's trademark inventive guitar and vocal explorations with the indigenous sounds of accomplished African instrumentalists and singers. The result is at once haunting, exuberant, cinematic, personal and resoundingly assured. Stern has discovered her surest artistic footing in the sahel and savanna of Africa.
Alu Maye (Have You Heard) features four original tracks written and performed by Leni Stern, Bassekou Kouyate, Ami Sacko and Haruna Samake. It also features a cover of Bob Dylan's 'It Ain't Me Babe'.

love comes quietly
The 13-song CD draws upon influences as far-ranging as Africa and India, and its combination of
instrumental and vocal tracks reveal Stern's
growing World Music influences. On "Reseke Bare Tore Nain", for example, she features
the haunting vocals of Dhanashree Pandit Rai. Much of the album was recorded on vintage
analog equipment at Matt Wells' Studio in New York, giving the songs a thick, dense quality
(eerily absent on much of today's all-digital music.) Stern's rock and blues guitar solos
permeate throughout, providing a soulful, assertive backdrop to her fascinating lyrics.
The songs feature the contributions of a community of brilliant musicians.

An aural travelogue of sounds from around the world, there are stories from India to Africa to New Orleans.
It was recorded at New York's famed Magic Shop Studios in June and October 2003, and at Leni's own Evening Light Studio at Charlie Parker Place, NYC.
